Case Study: Sweat, Sunscreen, and Retention. We Tested It.
Summer is usually the ultimate retention killer. Between the sweat, the oily sunscreen, the chlorine, and the intense campfire heat, lash adhesive goes through a lot of stress in June and July.
As lash artists, we dread the "Summer Shed." Clients come back with messy, closed fans and gaps, claiming they "didn't do anything different." But the reality is, their lifestyle changed completely the moment the temperature hit 85 degrees.
At our sister salon, The Blooming Rose, we noticed a trend: Clients who went on vacation were coming back with bare eyes. So, we decided to test a solution using Luxom Lash products to see if we could "summer-proof" a set.
The Experiment
We selected 10 clients who were heading out on active summer vacations (Lake Powell, St. George, and Mexico). We split them into two groups to test the effectiveness of protective sealants.
-
Group A (The Control Group): Were given standard aftercare instructions (wash daily, avoid oil). They did not use any extra products.
-
Group B (The Extra Love Group): Were given a bottle of Luxom Lash Sealant and instructed to apply it every morning before heading to the pool or beach. Stylists also applied a little extra Hidden Gem Adhesive along with Pro Bond at the end of the lash service.
The Results
The difference was shocking, even to us.
-
Group A: Returned at 2.5 weeks with roughly 30% retention. Their lashes looked "messy," and many volume fans had closed up into spikes due to oil and sunscreen residue sitting on the lash line.
-
Group B (The Extra Love Group): Returned at 3 weeks with 60% retention. Their fans were still open, fluffy, and the bond was strong. They reported less burning after swimming in the ocean, too.
The Science: Why Chlorine & Sunscreen Damage Glue
To understand why Group B won, you have to understand the chemistry.
-
Sunscreen = Oil: Most sunscreens contain oils that act as a solvent to cyanoacrylate (lash glue). If a client sprays sunscreen on their face, it seeps into the lash line and slowly dissolves the bond.
-
Chlorine = Dryness: Chlorine sucks moisture out of the hair. This makes the natural lash brittle. When the natural lash gets dry and brittle, it shrinks slightly, which can cause the stiff extension to pop off the base.
Why Cleansing is the Solution
Think of Luxom Cloud Cleanser like a top coat for nail polish. It creates a clean environment for your extensions to stay adhered to the natural lash.
-
It Removes Oil: It stops the sunscreen and sweat from breaking down the adhesive bond between your natural lash and the lash extension.
-
It Removes Chlorine and Debris : It cleans and hydrates your lashes so that chlorine and salt water doesn't have a chance to sit and break down bonds.
How to Teach Clients to Use It
Keep lashes fluffy and retention strong with the Luxom Cloud Cleanser routine. For a precise and thorough clean, we recommend washing one eye at a time at the sink. simply dispense a pump of foam onto the back of your hand or the cap—never directly onto the face. Using a soft, fluffy blending brush, scoop up the foam and gently swirl it along the lash line of your closed eye. Rinse by cupping cool water over the eye, then repeat on the other side. Pat dry and brush for that fresh, full look.
Tip: Use a clean, fluffy eyeshadow blending brush instead of a standard lash brush for a gentler, deeper clean between the layers!
