The "Fall Shed" Explained: How to Talk to Clients About Loss
It happens like clockwork. All summer, your retention was perfect. Your clients were happy. Then, September hits, and suddenly your inbox is full of messages: "I think I’m shedding faster than usual." "My lashes look gappy after only 2 weeks."
As an artist, your first instinct is to panic. Is my glue bad? Did I change my technique? Is my humidity off? Relax. It’s not you. It’s Biology.
Welcome to the Autumn Lash Shed. It is a scientifically proven phenomenon, and understanding it is the key to keeping your clients calm.
The Science: The Telogen Phase
Our hair growth cycles are heavily influenced by sunlight, Vitamin D, and hormones.
-
Summer: Our bodies hold onto hair (the anagen/catagen phase) to protect the scalp and skin from the sun.
-
Autumn: As days get shorter and UV exposure drops, the body shifts into the Telogen (Resting) and Exogen (Shedding) phase. We shed the old, heavy summer hair to make room for new growth.
This happens on our heads, and it happens on our lash lines. A client who normally loses 2-3 lashes a day might lose 5-7 lashes a day in September and October.
The Math of Loss
Let's break down the numbers for your clients:
-
Normal Loss: ~21 lashes per week.
-
Shedding Season: ~35-50 lashes per week. Over a 3-week period, that is a huge difference in fullness! A client coming in at 3 weeks might have 30% fewer lashes left than usual.
The Client Script (Copy/Paste This)
Don't get defensive when they complain. Educate them.
"You are totally right! We are officially in the 'Fall Shedding' season. Just like pets shed their summer coats, humans shed their lashes faster in September to make room for new growth. It’s totally normal and temporary! We might need to book your fill a few days earlier this month to keep them full until your cycle stabilizes."
Your "Shedding Season" Protocol
While you can't stop nature, you can manage the effects.
-
Book Sooner: Encourage clients to come in at 2 weeks instead of 3 for the next two cycles.
-
Lash Serum: This is the best time to sell Lash Growth Serum. Serum prolongs the Anagen (growth) phase, helping to delay the shed slightly and strengthen the new baby lashes coming through.
-
Check Your Humidity: Remember, September weather is volatile. The mornings are cold, the afternoons are hot. Watch your hygrometer closely! If your heater kicks on for the first time, your humidity will drop, which can affect glue. Keep a humidifier running just in case.
Stay Calm and Lash On Don't let the shed shake your confidence. Educate your clients, keep your adhesive fresh, and ride the wave.
