The "Lash Flu": 5 Signs You Are Sensitive to Adhesive Fumes
We talk a lot about client allergies, but we rarely talk about the person sitting right above the glue bottle: You.
Have you ever finished a busy Saturday of lashing and felt... off? Maybe your nose is runny, your throat feels scratchy, or you have a dull headache behind your eyes. You might think you are catching a cold, but by Monday morning, you feel fine.
This phenomenon has a name in the industry: The Lash Flu. It is the body’s reaction to chronic exposure to Cyanoacrylate fumes. At Luxom Lash, we want you to have a long, healthy career. Here is how to recognize the signs and "fume-proof" your studio.
The Science: What Are You Breathing?
Lash adhesive contains Cyanoacrylate. As it cures (dries), it releases fumes. Because we work so closely to the drop, and because we often hunch over the client, we are in the direct "fume zone." Over time, your body can become sensitized to these chemicals.
The 5 Symptoms of Lash Flu
-
The "Drip": A clear, runny nose that starts about an hour into your shift.
-
The Cough: A dry, tickly cough that clears up on your days off.
-
Brain Fog: Feeling unusually groggy or having trouble focusing.
-
Headaches: Specifically tension headaches near the sinuses.
-
Skin Irritation: Dry or red patches around the nose or eyes.
How to Fix It (Without Quitting)
If you have these symptoms, you don't need to quit lashing. You just need to upgrade your safety protocols.
1. The "Open Drop" Rule Never leave a used glue drop sitting on your tile. As long as it is liquid, it is off-gassing fumes.
-
The Fix: Use a Glue Neutralizer (or water) to shock-cure the old drop immediately, or cover it with a piece of tape before dispensing a new one.
2. Humidity is Your Shield Fumes love dry air. They travel further in it.
-
The Fix: Keep your humidity between 45-55% using a humidifier. The moisture in the air grabs the fumes and weighs them down so they don't float into your nose. Check your levels with a Hygrometer.
3. The Nano Mister Technique Using a Nano Mister isn't just for clients; it’s for you. By misting the set at the end, you force-cure the adhesive instantly, stopping the chemical reaction and eliminating lingering fumes in your room.
4. Fresh Glue Matters Old, thick glue releases stronger fumes as the stabilizers break down.
-
The Fix: Replace your glue bottle every 4 weeks, regardless of how much is left. A fresh bottle of Luxom Hidden Gem is cleaner and safer to work with.
