Mapping the "Fox Eye": Why L-Curl is Your Best Friend
We all have that client who comes in pulling their temples back and saying, "I want my eyes to look like this." The snatched, lifted, "Fox Eye" or "Eyeliner Effect" is a massive trend that isn't going away.
But if you try to create this look using standard C or D curls, it often falls flat. Why? Because standard curls are semi-circles. When you place a long D-curl on the outer corner, it can actually weigh the eye down or curl back into the eyelid, creating a "droopy" look instead of a lifted one.
To get that true liner look, you need to master the specialty curls: L-Curl and M-Curl.
What is L-Curl?
Unlike a C or D curl which is curved like a circle, an L-Curl has a flat base and then shoots straight up (shaped literally like the letter L).
-
The Benefit: Because of the long flat base, it has incredible retention on straight or downward-pointing natural lashes.
-
The Look: It creates a sharp, angular lift that mimics the flick of winged eyeliner.
The "Fox Eye" Map
Here is the exact map we use to get that extreme lift without weighing down the eye.
Zone 1: The Inner Corner (Very Short)
-
Lengths: 7mm - 8mm
-
Curl: C-Curl (Keep it natural here; L-curl can look harsh in the inner corner).
Zone 2: The Transition (Mid-Eye)
-
Lengths: 9mm - 10mm
-
Curl: Start mixing C-curl with L-curl to blend the texture.
Zone 3: The Drama Zone (Outer 1/3)
-
Lengths: 11mm - 12mm
-
Curl: L-Curl or M-Curl. This is where the lift happens.
Zone 4: The Safety Net (The Very End)
-
Lengths: Drop back down to 10mm L-Curl.
-
Why? You never want your longest lashes on the very last natural lash. It will droop. Dropping the length at the very end keeps the lift perky.
Application Tips for L-Curl
Working with L-curl requires a slightly different technique than standard volume.
-
Direction is Key: You must place the lash pointing slightly outward toward the temple, not straight up. This emphasizes the elongated "cat" shape.
-
The Base: Ensure the entire flat base of the L-curl is attached to the natural lash. This gives you that "magnetic" retention.
Who Should AVOID This Look?
Be careful with Wide Set Eyes. The Fox Eye pulls the visual focus outward. If a client already has wide-set eyes, this style will make them look wider. For these clients, try a "Squirrel" map using M-Curl to lift the arch of the brow instead of the tail.
Don't Be Scared of the L L-Curls look intimidating in the tray, but they are surprisingly easy to fan once you get used to the base. Start with our Luxom Signature Satin M-Curl Tray to practice.
